January 18th.
Wan Gaofeng, who hurried back from the Minqin base, met up with Huang Qinxin and others who had arrived earlier.
The symposium was held in Yichuan County, Qin Province.
The venue is located inside the Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area.
Even in the ice and snow, Hukou Waterfall still flows, but the amount of water in winter is much smaller, and it lacks the majestic momentum of spring and autumn.
One of the organizers was very concerned about the Hailufeng Company behind the Blue Whale Airship Company. So when Wan Gaofeng arrived, he immediately came to greet him: “Hello, Mr. Wan, I am one of the leaders of this symposium, Li Guowei, and I am very happy to meet you.”
“Hello, Mr. Li.” Wan Gaofeng also responded in a formal manner.
Li Guowei brought Wan Gaofeng with him and introduced him to some of the more important guests at the symposium.
“This is Academician Zhang, who has made outstanding achievements in the fields of hydrology, water resources, and water conservancy engineering.”
“Hello, Academician Zhang, I’m Wan Gaofeng and I’ve heard of your name for a long time.”
The two shook hands, and then Academician Zhang smiled and shook his head: “Mr. Wan, you are too polite.”
Li Guowei on the side continued to introduce: “Mr. Wan, this is Academician Hu, who mainly studies sediment movement mechanics, riverbed evolution and river regulation. He has in-depth insights into sediment problems in water conservancy projects and is also a major researcher on the sedimentation problem of the Yellow River.”
Wan Gaofeng extended his hand: “Hello, Academician Hu, it’s a great honor to meet you.”
Academician Hu knew that Jiang Miao was behind the Blue Whale Airship Company, so his expression became even more enthusiastic. While shaking hands, he said, “Mr. Wan, your parent company’s new water purification equipment will be a powerful tool for the management of the Yellow River in the future. Let’s communicate more later.”
“Haha, I should learn a lot from Academician Hu.” Wan Gaofeng did not dare to be arrogant.
“General Wan, this is Academician Wang, who has been engaged in hydrology and water resources research for a long time and has made important contributions to water resources allocation in water conservancy projects.”
“Hello, Academician Wang.”
Everyone exchanged pleasantries for a few minutes.
Academician Hu could not wait to speak: “Mr. Wan, we can speak freely at this symposium. Don’t be shy. Whether we can come up with any results or not, we will live up to the invitation of this symposium.”
“The reason I came here this time is actually to promote the hanging boat airship that our company has been experimenting with recently.” Wan Gaofeng did not hide anything and went straight to the point.
Academician Wang at the side raised his glasses and said, “Oh? I read the report about that airship. I heard it can lift a 2,750-ton ship?”
“Yes, currently the Blue Whale 3 airship can lift a maximum of 2,750 tons. We have cooperated with Jiangxin Shipyard to build five experimental transport ships. By using new materials to enhance the overall structure, we can ensure that the hull structure will not be damaged during transportation.” Wan Gaofeng said as he took a stack of documents from his assistant and distributed them to the people present.
After receiving the document, Academician Hu looked through it for a while, and then he asked, “Mr. Wan, can only new boats be used for this crane operation?”
Wan Gaofeng nodded. “Old inland transport ships can also be lifted when empty, but if they are fully loaded, we have conducted tests and found that the steel structure will deform to varying degrees. Unless the cargo on the ship is reduced to about 1,200 tons, it can barely reach a relatively safe threshold.”
“I see. It seems that the new transport ship is better.”
“yes!”
We talked about transport ships and airships for a while.
Li Guowei at the side took the opportunity to bring up the topic: “Mr. Wan, if the airship crane is used, then the Shanxi-Shaanxi Grand Canyon may be fully accessible in the future. I wonder what your company thinks of this project?”
“What do you think?” Wan Gaofeng paused for a moment, then pointed to the Hukou Waterfall in the distance: “Although the airship can eliminate some natural and artificial obstacles, the water from the Yellow River is still not enough!”
“In fact, the Yellow River in the Shanxi-Shaanxi Grand Canyon section has a general water depth of about 5 to 15 meters due to the construction of a large number of cascade hydropower stations. Some sections of the river can even reach 15 to 25 meters, which can basically meet the navigation needs of 2,000-ton inland transport ships,” explained Academician Wang, who is engaged in hydrological research.
Wan Gaofeng expressed his thoughts: “What I am worried about is the instability of the water volume in the Yellow River.”
“Haha, Mr. Wan, don’t worry.” Academician Hu laughed, and then he explained: “Just now I said that your parent company’s water purification equipment can actually solve part of the water resource problem in the middle reaches of the Yellow River.”
“Oh? I’d like to hear more about it.” Although Wan Gaofeng guessed something, he pretended not to know.
Academician Hu did not try to be mysterious, but explained to Wan Gaofeng and others: “Recently, our Academy of Engineering and Academy of Sciences have taken on several research projects on the diversion of the Yellow River.”
“Divert the Yellow River?”
“Yes, it is to intercept the Yellow River.” Academician Hu looked at the Hukou Waterfall with floating ice: “In recent years, the amount of water flowing into the sea from the Yellow River every year is about 30 billion cubic meters, and the data monitored at Huayuankou shows that the middle reaches of the Yellow River inject about 55 billion cubic meters of fresh water into the lower reaches every year.”
Give everyone a little time to think.
After a while, Academician Hu continued, “So the plan is to keep the water from the middle reaches of the Yellow River, and then build an overhead gravity water pipeline near the estuary to transport fresh water from Haikou to Huayuankou and inject it into the Yellow River every year.”
“this…”
“How to solve the silt problem in the middle reaches?”
“Ecological issues need to be considered!”
“Although 55 billion cubic meters of fresh water can be intercepted, the hundreds of millions of tons of sediment in it are indeed a big problem.”
“However, by doing so, a series of artificial lakes can indeed be formed in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, and even the local climate of Qin and Jin can be changed.”
“The ecological risks are too great, and we need to think carefully about it!”
Everyone started a heated discussion.
Some people think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, while others think the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
The two most critical issues among these are siltation and ecological problems.
After all, if the middle reaches do not supply water to the lower reaches, the silt will soon be deposited in the river channel, as the construction of the Sanmenxia Hydropower Station taught us.
When the Sanmenxia Hydropower Station was originally designed, the rate of siltation in the Yellow River was underestimated, resulting in continuous siltation in the reservoir area, which not only raised the water level but also increased many risks.
Although the management of the Loess Plateau is now very perfect, which has greatly reduced the sediment content in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, the middle and upper reaches of the Yellow River still discharge a large amount of sediment into the downstream every year.
For example, in Sanmenxia, about 230 million tons of sand are discharged downstream every year.
If the discharge of sand to the downstream is suddenly stopped, the consequence will be rapid siltation in the reservoir area. It is estimated that the entire reservoir area will be filled up in less than ten years.
This is also the focus of discussion at this Yellow River navigation symposium.
The middle reaches of the Yellow River must drain sand from the lower reaches, and draining sand inevitably requires draining water, which creates a huge contradiction with the idea of diverting water from the middle reaches of the river.
Although water use in the downstream can be solved by using seawater desalination technology, the problem of siltation in the midstream is a difficult problem to solve.
After all, no matter how much it is managed, it is impossible to reduce the silt in the Yellow River to zero.
Therefore, a trade-off must be made, or a suitable diversion flow must be selected to ensure that the middle reaches can obtain as much fresh water resources as possible, while minimizing silt accumulation in the middle reaches reservoir area.
Disaster!
No wonder so many academicians have to be involved in this project; it’s clear that the higher-ups are undecided.
