The two numbers obviously don’t match.
Why does this happen?
The answer is that plants have transpiration. One acre of leafy vegetables in the greenhouse will evaporate about 2 to 3 cubic meters of fresh water every day. The water vapor formed by the evaporation of these fresh water will cause the humidity inside the greenhouse to increase due to the barrier of the greenhouse film. After the temperature drops at night, part of the water vapor condenses into dew and is absorbed by the plants and soil again.
But consider the dynamic balance relationship.
As irrigation water accumulates, the water vapor will increase to the point where the humidity inside the greenhouse will exceed the limit. In order to avoid diseases such as root rot and white mold caused by a high humidity environment, the greenhouse can only be ventilated to expel the high-humidity indoor gas.
This is the fundamental reason why, although only 4 to 6 tons of radishes and about 1 ton of leaves were harvested, 80 to 120 cubic meters of fresh water were consumed.
Jiang Miao turned his head and looked at Zhang Chengdong: “Chengdong, you can consider planting Senzu beans and vegetables and fruits together. That is, plant vegetables and fruits in one greenhouse and plant Senzu beans in another greenhouse, and then connect the two greenhouses to allow air to circulate.”
“Joint planting? Senzu soybeans…” Zhang Chengdong muttered to himself, and soon he came back to his senses, his eyes lit up: “I understand, boss, your idea is very valuable.”
Due to the characteristics of the Senzu soybean, its leaves absorb moisture from the air. If it is in high humidity air, it can maintain good growth without even watering.
Its root tubers also store water. The weight of the root tubers of the Senzu soybean with a growth period of half a year can reach about 15 to 18 tons, and its water content is about 96%.
If one greenhouse is used to grow vegetables and fruits and another greenhouse is used to grow soybeans, only one portion of water is needed. The enclosed space of the greenhouse can be used to supply water to the soybeans through the air.
Of course, this is just one of the benefits.
Another benefit is that by harvesting the root tubers of the Senzu soybeans, the water is extracted from the tubers using normal temperature drying technology, the organic matter in the tubers is used to generate electricity and biogas, and the water is reused as greenhouse irrigation water.
In this way, the two-acre greenhouse can recycle nearly 40 to 50 cubic meters of fresh water every year during the planting process.
This can further enhance the agricultural potential of the Northwest region.
As for why we don’t harvest the roots of the Senzu soybeans grown in the open air and squeeze water from them for use.
The reason is naturally to take into account the growth needs of perennial soybeans.
After all, the Senzu soybeans grown in the open air in the arid desert areas of the northwest need the water resources stored in the rhizomes to realize their perennial ability.
The leaves of the Magnolia soybean can absorb relatively limited water at night in the open-air northwest desert environment. Therefore, once the root tubers are harvested, the Magnolia soybeans that are replanted next year will need to be irrigated with groundwater, and the growth cycle and first-year yield will decrease.
Therefore, harvesting the underground water-storing roots of the Senzu soybeans is a cost-prohibitive behavior in open desert areas.
This is different from planting inside a greenhouse.
There is too much water evaporating inside the greenhouse and being trapped inside, so a special plant water pump is needed to achieve balance.
Zhang Chengdong has made a rough estimate and predicted that if this method of joint planting can ensure that 10 acres of joint planting greenhouses can be used, 100 to 125 cubic meters of fresh water can be extracted every six months to supply another 2 acres of joint planting greenhouses.
Currently, Hailufeng Company has obtained an annual quota of 20 million cubic meters of water for agricultural planting in Liangzhou area. If drip irrigation is used for all of it, it can irrigate nearly 200,000 acres of greenhouse farmland.
If a joint planting model is adopted, 444,000 acres of greenhouse farmland can be planted, of which the greenhouse area for growing vegetables and fruits can reach 222,000 acres.
Don’t underestimate the increase of only one-tenth in vegetable and fruit planting area. If the area is expanded, it will also be a considerable scale.
As for extracting water in this way, will it result in too high water costs?
Actually, there is no need to worry about this.
Because the harvested root tubers of Senzu soybeans contain 5% organic matter and minerals, they can be used as raw materials for power generation and organic fertilizer. This part of the income can cover the cost of harvesting the tubers, and water is equivalent to a by-product.
Just like extracting water from vegetables and fruits, it is itself a by-product of drying vegetables and fruits. Since it is a by-product, its production cost is covered by the main product of the process.
Lv Weibin, who was listening with great interest, also understood the operating mechanism. He smiled and said, “Then I will instruct the Liangzhou branch to build an experimental base first. Dried vegetables and fruits are indeed conducive to promotion in the northwest region.”
