Imperial Capital.

Hunter Headquarters.

Sunlight streamed through the curtains onto the chessboard, where Will was holding a chess piece, hesitating.

Seryu impatiently swung her leg, “Will, it’s your turn!”

“Don’t rush me…” Will dropped a piece heavily.

The chess piece clattered against the board, a crisp sound that was particularly clear in the quiet room.

“Will, Seryu, the tea is ready.”

Bols slowly walked over, carrying a tray. He carefully placed the teacups beside the chessboard, avoiding disturbing their game.

“Th-Thank you very much, Mr. Bols.” Will looked up, scratching the back of his head, a little embarrassed.

“Thanks.” Seryu thanked him curtly.

Bols’s lips, however, curved into a gentle smile, “It’s nothing, nothing. I’m happy to do a small thing for my comrades.”

Steam slowly rose from the teacups. Will suddenly put down the chess piece in his hand, his expression becoming serious.

“What’s wrong, Will?” Bols keenly noticed his change in mood and asked with concern.

Will clenched his fists, his knuckles slightly white, “I… I just feel unwilling.” His voice trembled slightly, “Bols, you’re such a good person… But those people outside, just like those two merchants last time, they only look at appearances and then…”

Bols gently put down the teapot. He looked down at his scarred hands, his voice low, “Will, I’ve said it before, I’m not a gentle person.”

The room fell silent for a moment, with only the sound of Seryu’s chess piece landing on the board.

“I once…” Bols took a deep breath, “was ordered to burn down a village that had an outbreak of plague. Men, women, and children, none were spared.”

His fingers unconsciously rubbed the rim of the teacup, “And another time… It was later proven that they were political prisoners who were framed… I personally lit the stake.”

Will suddenly stood up, his chair scraping against the floor with a harsh sound, “But those were military orders! Tasks that had to be carried out! Mr. Bols, you are a soldier, this is not your fault.”

“Although it was something that someone had to do.” Bols smiled bitterly and shook his head, “But retribution is retribution. Those people I helped treating me that way… Perhaps this is my retribution…”

In this heavy atmosphere, the door to the lounge was suddenly pushed open gently.

“Dear~”

A gentle female voice broke the silence.

At the doorway stood a woman with long, light-golden hair. Sunlight danced in her hair, giving her a soft halo.

She was holding a little girl of about four or five years old in her arms. The girl had the same golden hair as her mother, and her sapphire-like big eyes curiously surveyed the room.

“Daddy~” The little girl saw Bols and immediately waved her small hands happily, a brilliant smile blossoming on her face.

“Oh, why are you here?” Bols hurriedly stood up, his voice filled with unconcealed surprise and nervousness.

The woman held up a carefully wrapped bento box, tied with a cute red bow, “You, you forgot the bento we made together at home again.”

Her tone carried a hint of doting reproach.

“Oh no! This was specially prepared by you two for me!” Bols slapped his forehead.

“Daddy is a scatterbrain!” The little girl giggled, pointing a small finger at Bols.

The woman took a few steps closer, “You work so hard, you should eat on time.” Her eyes were full of concern.

Will stood rooted to the spot, maintaining his half-standing posture, as if under a spell.

This scene felt familiar—just like the last time he tried to comfort Seryu but found that she didn’t need comforting at all.

“Daddy, hug~” The little girl opened her arms, squirming restlessly in her mother’s embrace.

“Alright, alright, my little princess.” Bols carefully took his daughter from his wife’s hands, his movements as gentle as if he were handling the most precious treasure.

He turned to Will, his eyes shining with firm light, “My family knows about my work, but they choose to understand and support me. As long as they are by my side, I can bear any heavy past.”

Sunlight streamed through the window onto the family of three, giving them a warm halo.

Will instinctively raised his hand to cover his eyes, exaggeratedly acting as if he was blinded by the light, “This… Is this the power of love? It’s too dazzling!”

Seryu quietly took a sip of tea, her gaze thoughtfully shifting between Bols’s family and Will.

When she put down her teacup, a barely perceptible curve appeared at the corner of her lips.

“How happy…” she whispered, her voice almost drowned out by the crisp sound of the teacup clinking against the tray.

Bols’s wife considerately nodded to Will and Seryu, “My husband has been taken care of by you two.”

“Not at all, it’s Mr. Bols who has been taking care of us.” Will quickly waved his hand, a sunny smile returning to his face.

The little girl curiously surveyed the room, then suddenly pointed at the pistol on Seryu’s waist, “Is big sister a police officer too? Like Daddy?”

Seryu was startled for a moment, then smiled, “Yes, we protect everyone together.”

Bols watched this scene, gently putting his arm around his wife’s shoulder. The family of three, bathed in sunlight, formed a warm and moving picture.
