You helped him have a baby, what do you regret about the divorce? Chapter 070

Now, this thought seemed somewhat ridiculous. She mechanically and slowly hung clothes in the closet and folded them in drawers, her movements precise. Each time she picked up a piece of clothing, a thought flashed through her mind.

Was this dress too formal? Would this shirt appear too ordinary? She even thought of the clothes Zhang Lihua wore in the video—youthful and vibrant.

After organizing her clothes, she took her toiletries and a change of clothes to the en-suite bathroom. Although the bathroom was small, it was fully equipped, showing that the Lin family had prepared everything carefully for her. She turned on the hot water, and steam quickly filled the room, carrying a faint scent of soap.

She undressed and stepped into the shower, letting the hot water wash over her body. The warmth washed away the fatigue of the journey but couldn’t wash away the irritation in her heart. She closed her eyes, letting the water stream over her face, as if it could wash away the emotions she didn’t want to face.

She stood in the shower for a long time until the hot water dissipated her physical exhaustion before turning off the faucet. Drying herself and changing into clean pajamas, she felt a little more comfortable. Looking at the clothes she had taken off, she decided to wash them.

She found a clean basin in the bathroom, filled it with water, poured in laundry detergent, soaked the clothes, and then scrubbed them one by one. After washing the clothes, she wrung them dry and carried the basin to the balcony. The balcony was small, and the clothesline was already strung. She hung the clothes one by one, neatly arranged.

The night in the countryside was exceptionally clear, and she could see far more stars than in the city. She looked up at the night sky, feeling like a speck of dust floating in the universe, tiny and lonely.

After hanging the clothes, she returned to her room and closed the balcony door. The room once again returned to its quiet state. She walked to the bed, lifted the quilt, and lay down. The bed was soft and smelled of sunshine, making her feel relaxed. After a long day, she quickly fell asleep in bed.

Lin Gengjin came out of Liu Jiajia’s room and returned to the living room. Lin’s father and mother sat on the sofa, the lively atmosphere from earlier having somewhat subsided.

“Gengjin,” Lin’s mother looked at him, her tone hesitant, “is there something wrong between you and Xinyue…?”

Lin Gengjin’s body stiffened when he heard the name “Xinyue.” He sat opposite them, lowered his eyes, and remained silent for a few seconds.

“Mom, Dad,” he looked up at the elderly couple, his voice low, “She and I… we divorced.”

The living room instantly fell silent. Lin’s father and mother exchanged glances, their faces filled with shock.

“Divorced?!” Lin’s mother exclaimed, her voice filled with disbelief. “Everything was fine… why did you divorce?”

Although Lin’s father didn’t speak, his tightly furrowed brows and solemn expression showed the same confusion and worry.

Lin Gengjin sighed and rubbed his temples. He had never known how to bring this up. In their eyes, he and Xinyue hadn’t been married long, and there had been no quarrels, so why did they suddenly divorce? And the reason… it was truly unbelievable.

“Ah, this is hard to believe when I say it,” he paused, organizing his words, “but… it’s true.”

“What happened? Tell us quickly!” Lin’s mother urged anxiously.

Lin Gengjin looked at his parents’ anxious eyes, knowing that this matter couldn’t be hidden and that it was time for them to know.

“We don’t even have children ourselves,” he began with difficulty, “but she actually wanted to have a child for someone else…”

“What?!” Lin’s father slapped his thigh abruptly, his voice rising by an octave, “What nonsense are you talking about?!”

Lin’s mother was too shocked to speak, only staring at her son with wide eyes.

“It’s true,” Lin Gengjin said with a bitter smile, “She said there was a classmate who had been kind to her… she said that classmate had a serious illness and didn’t have much time left, and wanted Xinyue to help her have a child to carry on her lineage. I don’t know what I was thinking, but I actually agreed. And, she even said… she said that after having the child and repaying the kindness, she would live a good life with me and have children for me then.”

With each sentence he spoke, Lin’s father and mother’s faces grew a shade darker.

“I disagreed,” Lin Gengjin continued, a hint of weariness in his tone, “How could I agree to such a thing? I couldn’t accept it. But she… she insisted on doing it, saying she had a knot in her heart that had to be untied, otherwise she wouldn’t feel at peace. I couldn’t persuade her, and she wouldn’t listen to me… so, we divorced.”

After he finished speaking, the living room fell into a dead silence again. Only the ticking of the wall clock was exceptionally clear.

Lin’s father clutched his chest, seemingly out of breath. Lin’s mother’s eyes were red, tears welling up in them.

“Ah… how could such a thing happen…” Lin’s mother murmured, as if still reeling from the immense shock. She could never have imagined that her son’s marriage would end in such a way.

In her understanding, divorce was already a very serious matter, but the reason for the divorce was that her daughter-in-law was going to have a child for someone else? This was simply a fantasy.

“Yes,” Lin Gengjin’s voice was filled with helplessness and bitterness, “I also can’t understand… how it could turn out like this.”

He looked at his parents’ shocked and pained expressions, feeling very uncomfortable. He knew that this matter was a great blow to them as well. They had always hoped for him to marry, have children, and live a stable life, but such a thing had happened.

Lin’s father caught his breath, his voice filled with anger: “This Xinyue! She, she must be crazy?!”

“Dad, don’t say anymore,” Lin Gengjin stopped him, “It’s already happened.”

“How can I not say anything!” Lin’s mother also said with a sobbing voice, “Our Lin family has been clean for generations, how could she do such a thing! Isn’t this pushing you to your death?!”

“Mom, I’m fine,” Lin Gengjin comforted her, “Didn’t I come back?”

“It’s good you’re back, it’s good you’re back…” Lin’s mother wiped away her tears, “It’s just… what kind of a mess is this!”

Lin’s father sat there, his face gloomy. He couldn’t understand how a good girl could make such a choice. Was money really that important? Important enough to abandon her own marriage and dignity?

“Then, when did you complete the procedures?” Lin’s father asked.

“Not long ago,” Lin Gengjin said, “We did it very quickly, quietly.”

He didn’t elaborate on the arguments during the divorce process or Xinyue’s coldness; those were like knives piercing his heart, and he didn’t want to recall them or make his parents sad.

“Sigh…” Lin’s father sighed heavily, “This is truly… truly a misfortune for our family!”

“Dad, don’t say that,” Lin Gengjin felt even worse, “It’s not your fault.”

“Alas, we are old, we can’t manage you young people’s affairs anymore,” Lin’s mother wiped away her tears, her voice filled with deep powerlessness, “But, Gengjin, you must keep your eyes open in the future!”

"Repay a favor? You call this repaying a favor?" Lin Gengjin stood up suddenly, and the chair he brought over hit the floor with a "bang", making a dull loud noise that was particularly harsh in this quiet room. He stared at Su Xinyue, his eyes seemed to be spewing fire, his fingertips were slightly white due to extreme anger, and even trembled uncontrollably. "Su Xinyue, are you crazy? In order to repay that so-called favor, you want to give birth to a child for Zhao Ziyu? What's in your mind? Paste or shit?" "Husband, don't be angry, listen to me..." Su Xinyue quickly explained, "Su Xinyue, what do you think of me, Lin Gengjin? A dispensable decoration? A chess piece that you can sacrifice at will!" Lin Gengjin interrupted her, his voice hoarse due to anger, and every word seemed to be squeezed out from between his teeth, with a strong sense of disbelief and heartache. Su Xinyue also stood up, like a lioness forced into a corner. Her usually gentle eyes were now filled with stubbornness and determination, as if she had become a different person. Her eyes were frighteningly red, as if she had just experienced a heart-wrenching cry, or like bloodshot rabbit eyes, covered with dense bloodshot, revealing a desperate madness. "Husband, you don't understand anything at all! Do you think I am thinking? If it hadn't been for Zhao Ziyu, what would have happened to me now? I might have been killed by those little gangsters... by them... Now he is begging me in front of me, asking me to help him, how can I bear to refuse?"
